Going Through The Jungle

Written by Sr. Master Ron Sell
This game works well with children ages 4-8. You can have the students line up or you can have them in a circle with the instructor in the middle. When the game starts, everyone jogs on the spot and sings "Going through the jungle, going through the jungle...". When the instructor yells "Branch!" all the students duck and kihap. When the instructor says "Log!" the students jump and kihap. When the instructor says "Cheetah!" the students need to run in place very fast. And finally, when the instructor says "BEAR!" the students need to quickly lie down and play dead. When the instructor is not saying any of these, the students continue to sing "going through the jungle", and they jog in place. It also works very well if the instructor has a pool noodle to swing over the head, under the legs, etc. Kids seem to love this activity as a cardio warmup. by Theresa

Snake Drill

Written by Sr. Master Ron Sell

Line up the kids in a circle, with enough elbow room between.

I use circles on the floor to stand on so that they stay organized.

Take a jump rope and attach a sparring glove at one end, and hold the opposite end.

The instructor stands in the middle of the circle with the "snake" (jump rope.)

Instructor swings the rope in a circle for the kids to jump over.

If the "snake" touches (bites) a student they must go kick a standing bag and then get right back in the circle.

The student must jump over the snake when it comes by them.

Round 2: kids must do a jump kick (without hitting the instructor!) over the snake.

Enjoy!

Focus Ball

Written by Sr. Master Ron Sell

Line up the kids along a wall about two feet away from the wall, they must keep their hands up in guard position, tiger eyes and focused on the instructor.  Use a beach ball, the bigger the better.  Throw it at the child who has their guard up the best.  They must punch or kick, or elbow it right back to you.

You can have multiple instructors or assistants helping you in this.

Have a volunteer to run and get the stray beach balls.

Great pre-class activity to keep the early students focused.

enjoy!

Jake the Snake

Written by Sr. Master Ron Sell

Get a long rope (jump rope) and stretch it out across your training floor. Have an instructor on each side of the rope. If only 1 instructor pin the rope under heavy bag or tie to a chair. All children line up in lines on one side of the rope. When you say snake" or anything you would like to say  the children have to jump over the rope. The trick is that you are moving the rope. Now there are two ways to move the rope. Up and down (they jump for height) or side to side on the ground(jumping for distance). Tell them this is jake the snake!

Move It Up

Written by Sr. Master Ron Sell
Rewarding good focus and effort is a great way to motivate. In this drill have your students line up facing the front. Then have them all demonstrate a basic technique ie horse stance punch. Find the student with the best focus or most power, fastest punch, and move them to the front of the room with the instuctor. Keep going until everyone is up in front. This drill really gets kids fired up! Good luck and have fun.

Teaching Forms to 3 to 5 Year Olds

Written by
Hello, one of my biggest problems with the 3 - 4 year olds is getting them to do and remember a form. The way I solved this was very simple. I took our first basic form and broke down one leg of the movement. What I have the kids do when they line up is step back into a fighting stance, and shout. They step forward and down block, step forward and punch and finally step forward and front kick and shout. The next stage is to have them turn around and do the form in reverse. You are essentially doubling what they are doing. The two major areas to watch are now are they starting on the correct foot. Each additional month, add another leg to the form until they have mastered their first full form. By breaking down the form into these smaller patterns you have enabled the child to learn the form in smaller chunks.
